A revolutionary brain-activated PC mouse has been developed by scientists in the US, and could eventually be used to transform the way disabled and handicapped people are able to use their computers.
Mr. Douherty helps people with severe physical disabilities perform tasks in cyberspace they never thought imaginable. A hands-free controller called [the] Cyberlink reacts to brain-wave patterns, transmitted throughout the facial movements or breathing patterns, to give the disabled the ability to play interactive video games, control a compact disc player or surf the Net.
The astonishing prospect [of hand-free control] is becoming a reality because of a breakthrough by Dr. Andrew Junker, an electrical engineer and neuro-physiologist, who spent 25 years working towards creating mind-controlled machines.
Brainwaves have opened up a new world for people with physical handicaps. Residents of the Disabled Housing Trust in Sussex have been taught to use a computer without using their hands Some of the residents at [the Trust] mastered the technique in two minutes, to the delight of co-inventor Christian Berg and his USA-based Cyberlink team.
Think and it is done! Electrodes can now monitor brain waves and convert them into electronic signals that turn off the light or move a computer's cursor.
The Cyberlink system has appeared in numerous public demonstrations and television broadcasts. Its ability to move and click a computer mouse cursor, operate various video games, operate environmental appliances, steer a sailboat's auto pilot, provide relaxation and meditation biofeedback, operate a specially designed wheelchair, play music synthesizers, and provide a true interactive interface for virtual environments has been well documented.
My mind is here, under this suspended ceiling ... with the Cyberlink my mind can fly, soar, and search with ease.
